Most "won't close" problems are the safety sensors
Since 1993, every garage door opener has two small photo-eye sensors near the floor on each side of the door. If the invisible beam between them is blocked — or the sensors are misaligned or dirty — the opener refuses to close (or reverses) as a safety feature. Check for a blinking light on one sensor, wipe the lenses, and make sure nothing (a bin, a bike, a cobweb) is breaking the beam.
Other common causes
- Close-force setting too low — the opener thinks it hit something and stops
- Obstruction or debris in the track stopping the door
- Misaligned or bent track binding the rollers
- Logic board or limit-setting fault in an older opener
