If the door is stuck open: do not leave the house unattended if you can avoid it. Move anything valuable out of the garage and lock the interior door between the garage and the house — that door is often the weakest in the property and frequently left unlocked. If the opener will not respond, pull the manual release cord and try lowering it by hand, but only if the door feels normal weight. If it is heavy, the spring has gone; leave it alone.
If the door is off its tracks or hanging crooked: stop operating it entirely, and keep people and cars out from underneath. Do not attempt to push it back on.
If a spring has broken: do not try to lift the door manually. It is now full dead weight with nothing counterbalancing it.
If anything is under the door: cut power to the opener at the outlet before attempting anything.
