Torsion vs. Extension Springs: What's the Difference?

The two systems

Every garage door counterbalances its weight with springs, and there are two designs. Torsion springs mount on a metal shaft above the door opening and wind/unwind to lift it. Extension springs run along the horizontal tracks on each side and stretch and contract. Torsion systems are more common on newer and heavier doors, and generally last longer and operate more smoothly.

How to tell which you have

  • Torsion: a tightly-wound spring (or two) on a bar directly above the closed door
  • Extension: long, stretched springs running parallel to the tracks along the ceiling, usually with a safety cable through them

Why it matters for your repair

Both wear out and both are dangerous to replace yourself — they store enormous tension. Torsion springs are generally rated for more cycles and hold up better; if you're replacing extension springs, we'll often talk through whether a torsion conversion makes sense for your door. Either way, on a two-spring door we usually recommend replacing in pairs so you're not back in a month.
